We had a nice ride today. I was jonesing for the trails of Fairhill, but showers overnight continuing through this morning put the kibosh on that plan. Three hearty souls showed up at my place this morning as we headed out for a 2 hour loop of one of my favorite road rides. Slick Rick, Buddy the leg breaker, Tommy MC and I. Most of this ride is up hill, lots short punchy climbs. The loop never fails to lend itself to fast, aggressive, riding. One of the few rides that I think mountain bike tactics are more prevalent than road tactics. As we rolled out of the driveway, Tommy Mc said, "awful lot of horsepower here today folks..."
It rained like hell on us. The worst was when I flatted. Yeah, it really opened up on us then. I have to admit, I love the rainy rides. These days are when you have to dig deep with in yourself, and look at your commitment to the sport. How important are those 2 hours that you are going to ride? How many of your rivals are on the couch eating cocoa puffs? Man, cocoa puffs are hard to pass up.
And me, looking at a 24 hr race next weekend, and having spent the past 5 days on the sunny beaches of Bermuda, and off the bike, I wanted strike that, I needed this ride badly. I find that anytime I have a lay off of over 4 days, I need a couple of days to get my legs back in the flow. The boys didn't allow me any slack today, and very quickly it was apparent I had better get my shit together, or I'd be riding in the rain by myself.
Luckily, my legs were on a crash course today. Buddy the leg breaker was relentless, Slick Rick made a practice of burying himself, and then digging out one more sprint line, Tommy Mc complained about being out of shape, but was always right there... It was a good day. Up the final climb to my house, Tom said, "it's getting really quite, we aren't gonna sprint again are we?" It was a good ride.
Anyway, I know how people love to look at other peoples vacation slides so I have posted a few for your viewing pleasure...

Hi Mark, qwelcome back from Vacation. Yes, rain rides are the best, my true favorite, I always did well in rainy races also, dunno why, I like the gritty presence of blaring through the rain in a trance-esque state, it's sort of hypnotic....
thanks for the bump on my blog last week, it's nice to have encouragement..
