184: I sent this to my teammates:

not original but I figured I share anyway:

Ladies and gentlemen of the C3-Sollay Cyclocross team:

Always wear embrocation.

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, embrocation would be it. The long-term benefits of embrocation have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.

I will dispense this advice now.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your big ring. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the big ring until you’ve faded or done something silly like run a 1x9.

Trust me, in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. However, most of us won't really have a shot at a national championship until we make the 80+ class. So at least we have that going for us.

Fatmarc is fatter than you imagined.

Don't worry about this weekend’s race. Trying focus on one cross race is like trying to catch a fly with chopsticks. The real measure of your season will be the entire picture of all your races. No one race will define your season. The exception to this is nationals. You can suck all year long and win nationals, and it makes everything seem alright.

The really big troubles in your race are likely to be things that never crossed your worried mind, that you can’t control anyway, so why bother wasting the energy trying.

Play with your tire pressure. Yes, 60lbs is way too much.

Run File Treads.

practice your cornering.

Sing on the start line.

Work hard for your teammates and friends. Don't put up with people who use you like a $2 dollar whore.

Take the hole shot.

Don't waste your time on stressing the confirmed rider list. It doesn't control your destiny. It is not a magic 8 ball.

Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The season is long and, in the end, it's all for fun. We do this because we love it.

Remember compliments you receive. Forget the MANbra promoters who kicked you off the email list. Forget the guys that said you doomed your team because your results were bad, and that you only get on teams because of your blog. Forget the people that say they hope you have as much fun when you get upgraded.

If you succeed in doing this, tell me or my therapist how...

Don’t let the chip on your shoulder get too big, even if we all still have something to prove, and you want to destroy the bastards talking smack above.

Love your bike, but remember you can’t buy speed in cross.

Stretch.

Get food and drink into your system after the race. You only have 40 minutes to replenish.

Beer is a great recovery drink. (except for Zach, Sam ,Morgan and Jeb)

Maybe you'll win a race, maybe you’ll win a series, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll fight your way through the huge pack of cat4’s for the next 5 years. Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Have fun.

Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. It's the greatest instrument you'll ever own. That is not an endorsement of public nudity.

Celebrate your successes, learn from your mistakes, your best race may not be a race you win or place, but certainly when it all comes together.

Cheer for your teammates, work pit for them, stay for the elite races when you can, get there for the women’s b race when you can. After all what’s the point of a team if we don’t support each other?

Travel.

Race outside of the MANbra region. Take in as much as you can from the different regions, and learn the traits of each different area. Race in New England, New Jersey, PA anywhere outside of MANbra. Return to our home races a better racer for it.

Celebrate diversity.

Accept certain inalienable truths: The day you win a race, you are a sandbagger and will get called out for it. It’s better to work hard and take responsibility for your results, than to moan about someone else being a sandbagger.

Respect your elders. Learn from everyone you can in this game. The moment you think you know it all, you might as well buy a recumbent.

trust me on the embrocation.

respect

Mr Fatmarc

If the whole sandbagging thing is nonsense to you as per past posts..why do you continue to bring it up?

And if you don't promote a MABRA race - instead a superb MAC race or two - why do you want to be on the MABRA promoters email...in fact you will be glad you are off it in due time.

Just my 2 cents...

hey, it's me said...

To break one of my personal rules and answer a comment:

1. MANbra promoter’s list:
Simply put I am against taxation without representation. I have my hand in 3 cross races in the mabra region. Charm City, Granogue and Fairhill. We all pay a mabra fee. We are mabra cross promoters, and should have a say in the direction of cross in our region, regardless if we are in the MANbra series or not. Last year there was no issue having Rockburn or DCCX on the list, when they were not a part of the series. Best of all, when we were removed, as I understand at the urging of 1-2 new promoters, we were just dumped from the list, no off line email explaining what was happening, just cut off. Very courteous.

2. Sandbagging:
My stance has been pretty loud here, but the truth is I was looking for an inalienable truth for my parody. The sandbagging one seemed like easiest fit. I mean seriously, want to bet how fast we hear it right after the charm city weekend? So old. For reference please google “always wear sunscreen”

Thanks for the note “friend” and thanks for reading the blog…

Wonderful post. Thanks for putting it on your blog since I am not on the C3 cross list and would not have been able to read it otherwise. Here's to a FUN cross season!

Dude, your blogging is so good, I think you're actually just Stevil Kinevil and you're sandbagging on Blogspot. Not that there's anything wrong with sandbagging. I just wish I was good enough to do it in any sport other than Disorganized Whining, in which I'm world class. The new upgrade rules should eliminate a lot of lower cat backlogs over the next year or two and should ultimately result in a good situation - one or two large middle classes, a small beginner class and a small elite class.

I think you're sweating the MANBRA promoters list thing a bit too much, taking it too personal. You want to raise issues with the masses, you can do it through the Man/Bro list serve.

Ps. Your impromptu assist with a timely wheel change at Ed Sanders is something I'll always be grateful for. That was money and taught me something, something unrelated to tire pressure and setting the cantis so that the straddle release works right.

Let's let sandbagging go the way of the current administration ... say goodbye and good riddance.

And yes...not the most courteous way to remove one. I guess one might argue dccx and rockburn were prepping to be mabra races thus they were on - but frankly...I bet you will be glad you are off it.

Be good...smile....race hard and NO SANDBAGGING.

I'm framing this. Classic post. I'm bringing bags o'sand with me to Charm City and attaching them to my competitors bikes in a sad attempt to finish well. And a pair of spoke cutters. Look out, Dubeck. You're mine. Oh, and Mrs. Vettori, too.

Thanks friend.

You really get it.

Since you get it so well perhaps you could explain the mabra fee, what it's for, and how a race can pay the mabra fee and not be a mabra race?

Note that there is difference between being a mabra race and being part of the mabracross series.

Promoters have historically worked together and communicated to coordinate schedules and PROMOTE 'cross in the region. That's a good thing. We're all working toward the same goal, right?

We're certainly not organizing races for the money or because we've got tons of free time.
It's not to stroke our egos.
It's not because we love stressing a hundred details and wading through the beaurocratic swamp trying to secure good venues.

Regardless of series affiliation we're all races in the mid-atlantic community.

Community is a good thing.
Communication is a good thing.
As someone that loves cyclocross I want all of the races to thrive and I want the scene to flourish.

How about you?

Marc,

I have never raced...you know that. And I don't know nothing about nothing or race promoting. However, I have to say that this is pretty fucking funny....quite clever.

Chris (and Marc) - I assume Chris' comment post was aimed at 'Your Friend' - thus me.

I want cross to grow as much as you guys...but to be fair all one read was an open complaint about being kicked off the list and using "Manbra" comments. It sort of came off as sour grapes - not that you need to explain this to me or anyone - its one's blog and personal opinion - so have at it - but it also means folks will take away their own view of that posting.... 2 way street. And I was just asking a question. I've been on plenty of lists that I was removed for for similar reasons or asked to be removed...I was glad I was off them over time.

And cross promotion thru out this and other regions is key then frankly the MABRA list owners messed up - clearly coordinating schedules across a very short season is a reason unto itself to keep everyone on the same page. I might suggest being asked to be back for FYI purposes.

So that being said...have a nice day and see you at the races.

A friend....

ps...I am not a promoter and have no insight into fees etc. Not sure I need to know just as long as I turn to you guys and give a heartfelt thank you for your work in putting on the race...

(this is from my blog)

I will need to read further to find the answer...

i love marc vettori
marc... everybody loves marc

marc is an inspiration
his energy for the sport is only rivaled by his contribution to the sport
but I have a question
I thought I read somewhere that Marc will be racing as a Killer Bee this cyclocross season
a Killer Bee?
Marc Vetori a Killer Bee?

he was looking pretty spry at the fifth annual July Fourth Independence Day Cyclocross Practice!
and that was not just in his coaches eyes
the power meter data verifies things

I will have to read more deeply through his pages
I love the yarns he spins
maybe if I give his blog more than a scan I will find the answer to my question

http://fatmarc.blogspot.com/

okay marc... this next one is the beer talking...

if the sport of cyclocross has call ups
maybe the sport of cyclocross should have call outs

I am not calling you out
I am just busting your chops

I love Marc Vettori
even if my wife things he is cute in an old school 90210 sort of way
