Diane and I, like pretty much everyone on the east coast charged out early this morning trying to get out before the rains and total destruction that Irene is predicted to bring.

I have to admit, I know the state parks in Delaware were all closed, but there were tons of people out riding and running early Saturday morning.

Diane and I were playing on the cross bikes. The fire-roads through White Clay were mostly dry, but had some small muddy sections and a few greasy corners which we danced around, through, over.
Old Forks

We took turns jumping out of corners, and pushing each other into the imaginary tape. We rolled through town and a quick loop through the campus. Down one section of road, I dove up the bricked sidewalk, because that's totally like racing on cobbles, while she half wheeled me on the road. I stood to jump ahead, and pull in front of her on the road when a I caught my rear tire on a rogue brick.

I felt the rim hit it hard.

"don't flat, don't flat" I said to myself, as Diane accelerated a head of me and turned left towards the library. "SSSSSSSSSSS" I heard from my rear wheel and I new the day was over for me.
Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. Diane laughed at me, and made her way back to the car. I walked my bike to a local coffee shop and waited for her to show up and pick me up...

Coffee is good.

I talk shit because I care...

yes, I am sprinting from the hoods. Very un-pro and lame of me.
Because I talk shit I loved this quote from embrocation's Nathan Ward this morning:

" I have a bit of a mouth on me, and coupled with some years of experience racing bikes, well, I’m often that guy, bitching at the kid who isn’t pulling, encouraging the guy who’s trying but struggling, shaming the guy who just attacked pointlessly only to disrupt our collective rhythm. I absorbed this tendency from some of my older, wiser, and more experienced peers, and I can’t count the number of times I “got told” when I was doing dumb stuff in a breakaway or chase group. That’s how you learn, in a macho, crawling-up-the-totem-pole sort of way, and it’s effective. The respect of one’s peer group is worth a lot, to most folks. "

see when I talk shit, it just means I care.
Thanks to all the folks who have taken the time to "tell me".

Every time I have the opportunity to race in New England I come home with a smile on my face.

Big race, or small race there's something special to me about cross in New England.

Monkey leads out the first lap....

Just about a year ago, I gave my kid brother one of my old cross bikes."dude, you'll love cross..."  I think he is hooked.

it's okay to wear white until Labor day right?

My niece and nephew did their first races today... They came away with the goods!

It will be easier for me to convince you that my dog ate my number than the fact that despite being disappointed with my result, I was happy with my effort and intensity today.

great day hanging out with these folks!

While the spirit of neighborliness was important on the frontier because neighbors were so few, it is even more important now because our neighbors are so many.  ~Lady Bird Johnson

Each of us is a being in himself and a being in society, each of us needs to understand himself and understand others, take care of others and be taken care of himself.  ~Haniel Long

"Independence"... [is] middle-class blasphemy.  We are all dependent on one another, every soul of us on earth.  ~G.B. Shaw, Pygmalion, 1912

Never doubt that a small, group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.  ~Margaret Mead

We don't accomplish anything in this world alone ... and whatever happens is the result of the whole tapestry of one's life and all the weavings of individual threads from one to another that creates something. ~Sandra Day O'Connor

water ice ride

I did the water ice cyclcross ride with Monk and 30 other people in Philly yesterday.

D. Lowe hosted and there was a great crowd.
And Urban Adventure connecting pieces of trail and roads... it was super fun. Except for Port Royal. That was a kick in the nuts.

Really fun times.

Gentlemen's Ride

Gentlemen's Ride Champions: OLD DUDES RULE- Kurtee, Fuzzy, LEO and CZ.

Diane and I hosted a small ride with 50 or so of our closest friends last weekend. It was a bit of a scavenger hunt. I gotta say, these guys probably have hundreds of thousands of miles in their legs, and more trail knowledge, and tactical savvy than the rest of the riders combined. How many people have they helped become better riders, racers, cyclists? Each of them a Local Legend in their own right... good stuff...

I was kinda proud to see these guys take the day... I mean it was a fun ride... Good day for sure...

Kurtee kept saying, "we couldn't out gun them, so we have to outsmart them..."

good on them all.

thanks to everyone who came out, everyone had a blast...

can't wait until next year...
