cross season means

sometimes cutting the grass in the dark.

work long days, squeeze out a couple of efforts on the bike, cut the grass as quickly as you can...

jam some food in your mouth, kiss the wife and off to bed...

This past weekend Monk and I celebrated our 11th wedding anniversary.
To celebrate We did one of the things we love most: we raced cross.

Whirlygig treated us both well. I followed the strategy laid out pretty wonderfully by Mayhew in the latest edition of Cyclocross magazine. Well, of course I kinda blew the final two laps.. but damn it, I raced it and  it was awesome.

Monk had a solid ride as well, an continues to  improve with each week. I swear to god she is 100x tougher than I am...

As an observation on how things have changed in 11 years, cross that is, when we were married, we followed up our wedding with full cross seasons, that started after our wedding. Now, my vote would be to move cross back a few weeks, but what the hell. As Diane said today, if we got married today, we couldn't have had a September wedding....

Bob Reuther is one of those guys that has always been one of my heros. When I first started racing he was so nice to Diane and I , and just killing it. I'll admit I'm a little weirded out lining up against the guy. It's one of the things racing in the elite masters race that is just odd. Racing against guys I looked to up for so long.
More odd was on the first lap, when Bob and I are banging into each other through a few corners. "fuck, man that's Bob Reuther." "Fuck man, Bob Reuther is man handling me right now." It's bike racing. It's good racing for all...

health and fitness on the up swing.
my result wasn't stellar , but racing was. The result wasn't really the point, but the effort, the battles fought, won and lost. It was a stake in the ground for me, and a good day.

things I found in our washing machine Monday morning

this is a watch that Harlow passed to me. During one of the elite races one of the racers threw it at her and said "give to Fatmarc!" Thanks Anonymous Watch thrower. I love Timex Ironman watches!
assorted safety pins.
Pile of C3 team stickers that I was supposed to put on Monk's and my bikes, that I have now ruined.
Valve Stem Extender.

Okay, I didn't find this in my washer, but I liked the picture.
Bad Andy crushing the hammock before the race.
This one is just too good to not share.

goal fail...

Bad Andy, Sven and I
Okay, so a little while ago I posted my modest goals for the season.

Four little things. Well, two weeks into the season, two of the goals are pretty much out the window.
I got sick this weekend, and in an effort to not do what I normally do, which is race when I'm sick,
do some point mongering, and end up in a hole that I never recover from, I didn't race.

I worked the race, I worked the pit. I didn't race.

With that 2 of four goals were out the window.

New goals, race my bike. Just race, each race to the best of my ability and leave it all out there. get better...

Charm City was great fun. Had fun tons fun with all of the officials except one, had fun with the kids race, had fun working pit for all of my teammates. Hell, even had fun breaking the course down this afternoon.

We'll see if I can't get healthy this week, and put together a couple of solid rides in the next few races...

Monk had a good weekend, 21st Saturday, 24th Sunday... She's working hard... I think she is enjoying battling in traffic.
look for her, in traffic... yup she's there...
Love Cross. Love my team.

I'm getting a meat dress for christmas

FM: "Hey babe, how was your day?"

Monkey : "A little busy, had some stuff come up a little unexpected."
Monkey: "How about your day?"

FM : "Kinda the same. You know, I'm really hungry. what's for dinner?"
Monkey: "I was thinking we could whip up some tacos."
FM: " I love tacos..."

Thanks to Zach for helping with this exchange.
love cyclocross.
love my wife.

thanks to for the photos.

my dog is a shit machine...

Warming up with my teammates and I hear this from the crowd...

"that's Wes on the front, Auer is second, and the third guy, that's the big guy..."

awesome.  Saturday's race was hard. I struggled. Didn't expect that.
finished 51st.

Ouch.. Had fun racing again, but not my best...

highlight was following Joe P through a local line and he screams, "the tape is back!"
miraculously I ducked and made it under the tape unscathed. Unbelievable. I pretty much died shortly there after...

Sunday I started in the back of 50+ field. Fought my was to just outside the top 10 three laps in, and
kinda popped myself giving back spots to LVG, B Wahner, Doug G, and J West. I got myself together and pulled back a couple of spots to finish 15th. Not the greatest result, but frankly I was pleased with my ride and my effort.

highlight of the weekend by far was the folks in the community who were welcoming Diane back. She raced hard both days. I was really proud.

community is one of the big reasons I love cross.

I think I was at about a 7 this weekend. Gotta get that turned up to 10...

Two races in the bank... It was pretty awesome...

51 saturday, 15 sunday... weird science huh?

bigfoot lives in my backyard...

Saturday beckons. Cross is here.

I’m like a kid before Christmas morning.

I gotta be honest here. I made the mistake of looking at the pre-reg list for the Master’s 1/2/3 class.
the Chunky Monkey Dessert... My favorite.
It’s a murder’s row folks. Frankly, might be the deepest, most talented cross race I have ever entered.

Initially, I was intimidated.

Me, I’m just some dude. There are some real deal mother fuckers in that class.

I love cross. I work hard at it. I take pride in my work. I spread the gospel.

I’m gonna go bull durham on you here.

“I want to go out and ride my bike hard, and do my best. We’ll let the chips fall where they might.”

And I mean it.

Time Trial went well last week. I was considerably better than the time I thought I would run.

I’ve set some aggressive goals for myself this season. I tend to do that.
At the heart of it all, I want to feel good on the bike. I want to race my nemeses and victims.

Points or no points I want to walk away from this year, feeling better about the season than I did last year.
Pumpkin Muffin. Growing my muffin top everyday.
Where initially, I felt intimidated, I have to admit I’m kind of  excited to throw myself into the mosh pit that will be the master’s race Saturday.

It’s going to be a great year…

Safety Dance

Time Travel went well today. Had a ton of fun, and my time was a little stronger than expected.

Partnered with K-man, the two man tt was even faster, and lots of fun.
Thanks for dancing with me  K-man.

The hot tub time machine is nestled away for winter hibernation. only went time traveling once this year.

Today reminded me how much I enjoy it. In the future will, have to do so more...

The ball starts in 6 days... I love to dance...

haters be, well... hating

Three of the most interesting men in the world.

If BMC offers the Time Machine as their TT bike,

I give you my TT bike: The Hot Tub Time Machine:

I lent Monkey my wheels for about a month or so.
She gave them back to me on Monday.
I was putting them on my bike before our ride Tuesday morning.
I immediately notice the back wheel was out of true. After a closer inspection I realized there was broken spoke.

FM, in a playful and loving tone: "hey, what's up with breaking a spoke on my wheel there buddy? What are you doing smashing into curbs?"

Monk,  deadly serious: "I didn't do it, don't know what you are talking about."

FM, puzzled: "seriously? you've been using the wheels for a month, I just put them on my bike and there's a broken spoke, you broke it. Not a big deal, we'll get it fixed."

Monk, still serious : " not me man, what would I have hit?"

FM, realizing I'm not going to win here : " okay, you had the wheels for a month, I just rode it to the mailbox and back, I realized pretty quickly something was wrong. Now if you didn't break the spoke who did? the Garden gnome?"

Monk, with a smile: "Must have been a gnome. For sure a spoke breaking gnome."

FM, smiling back: "god damn gnomes."
